MATCH RESULT:

Adelaide didn’t need to hit top gear today to account for a very poor Mariners outfit.

Adelaide scored two goals in two minutes late in the first half and could have scored a third as well late in the second half.

The Mariners lifeless in attack despite a promising opening. Long season ahead.

Adelaide now face Melbourne in a blockbuster.

FINAL SCORE:

A tough start to the season for the Mariners could get worse this afternoon if they fail to show up with their best form against championship contenders Adelaide.

The Reds under Josep Gombau find themselves sitting pretty near the summit of the A-League ladder after scraping past the Phoenix last week.

An injury time winner by Sergio Cirio enabled United to secure three vital points that keeps them within reach of surprise ladder leaders, Perth Glory.

Despite securing the win, Adelaide under-performed in the second half against Wellington and need to be more proactive in possession against the Mariners.

Adelaide of course were eliminated by the Mariners in the first week of last season’s A-League finals and will be keen to exact some form of revenge when the two teams meet this afternoon.

Given their great start to the season, expectations are high for Adelaide this season and anything less than three points against the Mariners would be seen as a disappointment.

The Reds are playing some great football at the moment and if Marcelo Carrusca and Cirio are allowed to build on their strong form today then the Mariners will be in for a long afternoon.

Adelaide though are certainly not invincible. The Phoenix tore United apart at times last week playing on the counter attack and the Mariners certainly have the players capable of testing the Reds defence.

While Adelaide start favourites, the Mariners would have received plenty of confidence after coming back from two nil down to secure a draw against City and should be expected to cause United some problems.

With Gombau at the helm though, Adelaide appear very well drilled and their quality should once again allow them to secure a win.

Adelaide to win 2 nil.
