Young excellence, promotion battles, and a happy farewell: The Australian team of the week from players around the globe
Even though St.Pauli ultimately lost a high-scoring affair, Jackson Irvine was a standout, as well as scoring a late goal.
Sydney FC skipper Alex Brosque believes Western Sydney are in a false position at the foot of the A-League table ahead of Saturday’s big derby clash at Pirtek Stadium.
Brosque’s side are unbeaten this season under the leadership of coach Graham Arnold and beat the Wanderers 3-2 in round two, having came from 2-0 down.
But he said that result was a demonstration of how unpredictable derby games can be and is surprised at the Wanderers’ poor start to the season.
“Ladder position when it comes to derby matches like this means nothing,” he said.
“They’ve only got two points at the moment but they could very well come out and play like a team who is top of the table and that’s what we’re expecting.
“They’re Asian Champions and they deserve a lot of respect.”
Under Arnold the Sky Blues have become a tough side to beat and Brosque, who rejoined the club at the start of the year, said there is plenty of confidence in the camp.
“At the moment we’re winning, we’re finding ways to win games,” Brosque said.
“We were down 2-0 last time against them and found a way to come back and we showed good character against them.
“If we can keep doing what we’ve been doing and make sure we get the three points then it really shows the character and how far we’ve come as a club in the last 12 months.
“There’s a lot of confidence around the camp at the moment.”
