Cricket - and society - a lot different in 1992

The year 1992 was the last time the cricket World Cup was staged in Australia and New Zealand. A look back to that year reveals how much the game of cricket has changed, and society in general.

Rohit Sharma recently blasted a world record 264 for India against Sri Lanka. In the 1992 World Cup, there were only seven scores over 264 – by entire teams.

Of the 15 highest scores achieved in one day cricket only, three were achieved in 1992 or beforehand.

Only one of the top ten scores in World Cup history was made in 1992 or beforehand.

The record for the highest score batting first in 1992 was 363-7 off 55 overs by England against Pakistan. There had only been 11 scores over 300 in 1992 and five of those were achieved in 55 or 60-over games. Today there have been 11 scores over 400 made.

In the 1992 World Cup, Sri Lanka chased down a record 312 to beat Zimbabwe. Today that is the 18th equal highest successful run chase of all time.

Desmond Haynes (West Indies) held the record for most ODI runs with 7,513. Today Sachin Tendulkar (India) holds the record with 18,426. Tendulkar, who appeared at the 1992 tournament, also holds the record for most ODI centuries (49) and runs at the World Cup (2278).

At the end of 1992 tournament Javed Miandad (Pakistan) held the record for most runs with at the World Cup with 1029.

Kapil Dev (India) held the ODI record for most wickets with 226. Today Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka) holds it with 534.

In 1992 the record for most wickets taken in the World Cup was held by Imran Khan (Pakistan) with 34. Today Glenn McGrath (Australia) holds it with 71.

With a minimum of 1000 balls bowled, only three bowlers who played in World Cup after 1992 are among the top ten most economical bowlers of all time. They are Glenn McGrath (Australia), Gavin Larsen (New Zealand) and Shaun Pollock (South Africa).

In the 1992 World Cup Dipak Patel (New Zealand) was the most economical bowler, conceding 245 runs in 79 overs at a rate of 3.10 an over. The top ten most economical bowlers at the 1992 World Cup all conceded less than four runs an over. At the 2011 World Cup there was only 16 bowlers who conceded less than four runs an over in the tournament, eight of whom bowled 10 overs or less.

The record for most dismissals at the World Cup was held by Wasim Bari (Pakistan) with 22. Today it’s held by Adam Gilchrist (Australia) with 52.

Alan Border (Australia) held the record for most ODI games with 241. Today Sachin Tendulkar holds it with 463.

In 1992 the West Coast Eagles and Brisbane Broncos won their first premierships.
