After the horrific events of the Sheffield Shield match at the SCG, the cricketing community has been left in shock and despair.

Rarely has an incident like this occurred on a cricket field, and the severity of the injuries towards Phillip Hughes have left the wider community in anguish.

Messages of all kinds, through various social media outlets from cricketers and fans alike have been spread in support for Hughes, urging him to fight and recover.

Similar messages have been spread to Sean Abbott, the bowler who sent the bouncer towards Hughes, calling for him to have support, and rightfully insisting that the incident was not his fault

Cricket is a dangerous game. Hard cricket balls being hurled at speeds of 140 kilometres per hour are no laughing matter, and it is only those skilled and brave enough to be able to face them.

At times, injuries will occur, and it is simply ‘just cricket’, but this situation is not simply just cricket.

Often, the saying of ‘no one wants to see somebody hurt’ will be said aloud on a cricket field, after a batsmen has been hit by a ball, but this takes that saying to a whole new level.

It just reinforces the message, however, to enjoy the game.

Many associate cricket with the be-all end-all, and take it with the utmost seriousness. After Tuesday, however, one must surely realise the fragility of life, and how cricket is just a small part of one’s whole life.

It puts most things into perspective.

Cricket is just, and will always simply be, a game. It is played for enjoyment, and for those who take the game to a serious level they must take from this incident to enjoy the game, because it is obviously not everything in life.

This horrific event has united the cricketing community, as members from all around the world have sent their best wishes and prayers.

It is a game that unites us all, and in the light of these horrible times, it is a time where we all need to support each other.

As Hughes enters the battle for his life, all of our prayers and love go towards him.

Enjoy the game of cricket, and just remember it is simply just a game. Have fun, relax and enjoy the contest.
