Shaun Marsh scored an impressive century at the MCG as the race to replace Michael Clarke took a sad twist.

Phillip Hughes was felled by a bouncer at the SCG, he remains in intensive care in an induced coma after undergoing emergency brain surgery.

It means Marsh is set to replace Clarke in Australia’s Test squad for the opening clash with India, which starts in Brisbane on December 4.

Cricket Australia is yet to confirm the hamstrung captain will miss the game, but that is expected to happen on Wednesday.

“All I’m worrying about is trying to score as many runs as I can here (for Western Australia) and we’ll see what happens,” Marsh said of his Test hopes.

“Higher honours for Australia, I haven’t thought about at all.”

Marsh brought up his ton with three successive sixes off the bowling of Victoria’s Fawad Ahmed and finished the day undefeated on 134.

Marsh has scored two first-class centuries since returning from an elbow injury last month.

Earlier this year he compiled a polished ton in Australia’s Test win over South Africa in Centurion.

Alex Doolan, who was dropped from the Test side in Abu Dhabi last month, scored 12 on Tuesday when Tasmania were bowled out for 217 in Brisbane.

Doolan, who played four Tests at first drop, has failed to post a score of substance since returning from the UAE.
