Cricket world mourns Hughes

Cricket stars from around the world have expressed their shock at the death of Phillip Hughes.

England players, many of whom played with the 25-year-old in county cricket, took to social media to mourn the loss of New South Welshman, who died from injuries sustained from a bouncer while batting for South Australia at the SCG on Tuesday.

Former Test opener Nick Compton, who batted alongside Hughes during a successful spell at Middlesex in 2009 Tweeted: “Cuz I miss you so much, never has someone had such an impact on my life, my career, my outlook. devastated and upset. Love you bro.”

Ashes rivals Stuart Broad, Joe Root, Matt Prior, Kevin Pietersen and Paul Collingwood echoed similar sentiments with England seamer Jimmy Anderson offering sympathy for Sean Abbott, who bowled the fateful delivery .

“Can’t quite believe the news. Devastating. My thoughts go out to Phil Hughes’ family and friends. Thoughts also with Sean Abbott,” Anderson wrote.

Players from India, who are in Australia preparing for a four Test series also paid tribute from Adelaide where they are due to play a two-day game against a Chairman’s XI.

“Shocked and saddened by the news of Phil Hughes. Horrible day for cricket. RIP Phil and may your family gain the strength to cope,” said star batsman Virat Kohli.

Retired batting legend Sachin Tendulkar called the death of his former IPL teammate a “sad day for cricket”.

“Deepest condolences to family, friends and well wishers. RIP,” Tendulkar said on Twitter of his former Mumbai Indians teammate.

All-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who battled lung cancer two years ago, called Hughes’ death a “dark day for cricket”.

“Can’t believe Phil Hughes has gone! RIP my friend. My heart goes out to his family. Shocking,” Singh tweeted.

South Africa skipper AB De Villiers led the touching Twitter messages from a number of Proteas, who have just lost a five-match one-day series to Australia.

“Heart broken! A very dark day. You will be missed, Phil Hughes. My prayers and thoughts go out to his family & friends,” De Villiers wrote.
