Hours have passed, yet the death of Phillip Hughes’ remains unfathomable.

I received a message from my father
Slightly before four o’clock.
Have you heard the news? It read.
Immediately I knew. I was in shock.

For the preceding days, I’d waited anxiously,
Yearning desperately for good news.
Never considered the negative outcomes,
Never thought it was Phil we may lose.

Vale Phil Hughes, the lad from Macksville,
Forever in our thoughts.
He brought a nation to a standstill,
The news has left us in all sorts.

Taken far too young we say,
But wow, how much he achieved.
In a short time, touched the lives of millions,
And now those millions grieve.

Played his cricket with a cheeky grin,
Regardless of performance.
Often was considered very unlucky,
But would never accept the plaudits

His final innings was full of grit,
Typically determined.
Phil was not going to quit,
Until his test place was certain

Hughesy left us chasing his dream,
Doing something that he loved.
63 not out he shall remain forever,
Even now while he is above.

Australia mourns together as one
For a man we felt we knew.
As his best mate Clarkey said,
“We Love You!”
