The Western Sydney Wanderers head into this evening’s Sydney derby against cross-town rivals Sydney FC with only two competition points from six rounds of football.

A second loss in as many fixtures against their greatest rivals would leave the Wanderers a massive 16 points behind the team they host tonight at Wanderland.

Simply put, this game is make or break for the Wanderers’ A-League title hopes.

A loss could end their finals chances as early as the seventh round of the competition. Without looking into the history books, I’m fairly confident saying no team has won the A-League after starting the season winless from seven games.

On the flip side, a big win tonight against Sydney FC could be exactly what the doctor called for, and could ignite the Wanderers into action.

There is no doubt the talent is there. The squad named for tonight’s fixture is arguably stronger than the squad that conquered Asia. Nikita Rukavytsya, although still finding his feet since returning to the competition, is a genuine match breaker, and tonight could be his night.

Fans of both sides will remember the first instalment of the 2014-15 Derby well. The Wanderers shot out to an early 2-0 lead, only to see the game taken away from them. They should have picked up at least a point. There aren’t many justifications for throwing away a two-goal lead.

Sydney Fc on the other hand will take huge confidence from the result. If they were to fall behind tonight, well it’s not like they haven’t already overcome that hurdle this season.

Every derby fixture is important, but this could be the most important game in the fixture’s short history.

As it stands both sides have won three, with two draws. Sydney FC have won the last two, after not winning since the inaugural derby in October 2012.

Tonight’s winner will take a four-three lead in the history of the fixtures, which although important for bragging rights, means little compared to the importance of the result in the scheme of 2014-15.

A win will keep Sydney FC at the top of the table, undefeated, and having taken three points from the Wanderers’ fortress. A loss may see Sydney FC questioning themselves; although they started well, they’re far from the finished product.

A loss to the Wanderers may end their season. Confidence will be sapped, three points go to their bitter rivals, and in front of their own home fans.

A win however, would re-instil confidence, after beating an in-form Sky Blue side.

A draw would favour Sydney FC, who would remain undefeated. A draw wouldn’t crush the Wanderers, however at home they’ll want nothing less than victory.

Bragging rights are on the line, but they’re nothing compared to those all-important three competition points.
