Week 13 college football assessment

There are so many quality games this week, and I can see a lot of flicking between ESPN and and ESPN2 over the weekend.

It’s rivalry week and there are some cracking games with huge implications. These are the best of them.

Auburn at Alabama
For one year and one second Alabama has been waiting for this game. Auburn has fallen away a bit in the last few weeks and Alabama will want to sink the boot into them hard.

I would be very surprised if Alabama gave them a sniff in this game. It’s the one game they have been waiting for all year whether they will admit to it or not and they should roll them by a space here. A win will put them in the SEC Championship game and even a loss will still get them there if Mississippi State lose earlier in the day.

Mississippi State at Ole Miss
Rivalry games are always hard to win when you are the away team. This will be no different. Ole Miss has fallen away a bit of late with losses to Arkansas and LSU on the road and the cruel loss to Auburn at home but they should be fired up for this one.

They really should be unbeaten at home and quite possibly would be if not for a fumble from a season-ending tackle at the one foot line to one of their star players. On form you would have to favour Mississippi State but I hate tipping away teams in these games. Should Mississippi State win then they will be Auburn’s biggest fans as they see whether they make the SEC Championship game or not.

Arkansas at Missouri
Funnily enough this game, with a team ranked 17 against an unranked side, will have a massive bearing on the SEC this week. Arkansas has been on fire of late and they have looked really good the last month. Missouri, although being whitewashed by Georgia and falling to Indiana have a chance to make it to a SEC Championship game.

They are a team written off by all and sundry after a poor early start to the year but they just keep winning and another victory will see Georgia out of the top four race and possibly a chance of sneaking a top-four spot and knocking Alabama or Mississippi State out of contention by winning the SEC Championship game. They are the big x-factor team nobody is talking about.

Georgia Tech at Georgia
It’s another rivalry game. Georgia has their game before Missouri’s and on form they should get the business done at home. Then it comes down to a nervous wait as they need a Missouri loss to get into the SEC Championship game. All top four aspirations hang on whether they can get a win, Missouri a loss and winning the SEC Championship game.

Florida at Florida State
I just do not like the way Florida State is going. They remind me of Notre Dame two years ago. Back then Notre Dame kept finding ways to win, limped into a SEC Championship game and got blown away. They are a shadow of last season’s side, especially in defence. Still they should get the job done in this rivalry game and go into the ACC Championship against Georgia Tech next week.

Oregon at Oregon State
Yet again, another rivalry game, to round off an absolutely cracking week of college football. On form Oregon in a cakewalk but this is a rivalry game, teams fire up and just ask Arizona State, who had the national championship aspiration completely destroyed by Oregon State a couple of weeks ago. It’s a potential danger game but can see Oregon winning and going on to the PAC12 Championship match.

TCU has won against Texas in impressive fashion 48-10, while Baylor and Ohio State are very heavily favoured in their fixtures and should notch wins, making the top four very interesting.
