MATCH RESULT:

What a performance from the Phoenix. They struggled to click into gear for 30 odd minutes against a City side creating all the chances.

From the moment Burns capitalised on a poor error however, the Phoenix never looked back with Krishna, Bonevacia, McGlinchey and Burns tearing City’s defence apart.

Phoenix once again back with momentum after back-to-back defeats. City’s poor start to the season continues.

FINAL SCORE:
Wellington 5
Melbourne 1

Wins have been hard to come by for Wellington and Melbourne in recent weeks and both teams desperately need three points this afternoon to gather much needed momentum.

The Phoenix are coming off back to back 2-1 defeats to Adelaide and Perth – two of the A-League’s frontrunners. They were very competitive in both of those matches but were unable to snatch a draw in either contest.

Wellington however are back at home and should be favoured to perhaps control today’s contest against a struggling City side with just one win on the board this season.

Since defeating Brisbane Roar three weeks back, Melbourne have only registered a draw with the Mariners followed by another home defeat to Sydney last week.

The 2-2 draw against the Mariners in particular was a frustrating result given that City led 2 nil and were looking very comfortable throughout the match. It was a contest they should have won but two late goals from the Central Coast ultimately ensured 2 points lost.

Overall, it has been an underwhelming start for City this season given that there were strong expectations of the club following their unveiling earlier this year.

With a tough match across the Tasman coming up, City will need the likes of David Williams to shine this afternoon if Melbourne hopes to secure a vital win.

Wellington though have been impressive at home this season. They have won their past two matches at the cake tin and have played some good football over the past few weeks despite defeats to class opposition.

Back at home, the Phoenix should do enough to secure a tight win.

Phoenix to win 3-1.
