NSW rugby league captain Paul Gallen is out of hospital as he battles to be fit for his boxing bout with former Cronulla teammate Anthony Watts on Wednesday.

Gallen is scheduled to fight on the undercard of the Daniel Geale v Jarrod Fletcher fight at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion.

However his preparation was thrown into disarray when he reportedly contracted golden staph in his groin and underwent surgery in a Sydney private hospital on Friday in a bid to kill the infection.

He had been admitted to hospital on Tuesday night after experiencing severe pain.

Fight publicist Tristan Hay said on Sunday that Gallen was now out of hospital and “my understanding is he should be sweet” for the fight on Wednesday.

“We will know more tomorrow.”

Gallen is expected to front a pre-fight media conference with Watts, Geale and Fletcher on Monday.
