Racing Queensland have announced they are set to introduce free race replays. While it is a definite sign the rest of the industry must get its act together, there is still a long way to go.

This new proposal from Racing Queensland only gives form analysts and punters 30 days from the race to watch the race replays.

While it is a step in the right direction, it is still not exactly what is needed. Racing Queensland should’ve sent a statement to the other states and made the races free for as long as there is a capacity to store them.

Currently the only alternative is taping the late night replays on TVN and having to flick through the races to get to the content and races you actually want to see.

It’s a frustration that many in the industry face and having to pay for race replays in Australia is an absolute farce.

Where else in the world does a sport make fans pay for highlights of the sport? Imagine if you had to pay to watch replays of Odell Beckham Jr’s amazing catch from the NFL the other day.

For Australia’s biggest race day the Melbourne Cup, the only race replay that is available free to the public at the moment is the Melbourne Cup.

To also be part of the race replays will be the integration of Daily Sectionals which will ensure all times will be reviewed and adjusted if necessary.

“Making race replays available on the Racing Queensland Race Video website gives industry participants and punters access to free thoroughbred content they have never had before, improving the experience for all involved,” Racing Queensland chief executive Darren Condon said.

“The Daily Sectionals technology has been used by other Principal Racing Authorities with success and will ensure the accuracy of the times posted to RISA on Queensland races, which is a boost for not only our participants but also punters.

“We operate in a very competitive sports market and we need to ensure that we are able to provide our participants with the information they require, while also giving punters confidence in our product through initiatives such as the Daily Sectionals timing service.

“This is a great example of the industry working together to work on improvements to the way we do things and we will continue to work with industry associations to ensure our decision-making is in line with the requirements of the industry.”

The challenge is now up for the rest of the states to follow the precedence that Queensland has set and follow suit with free race replays. It’s time for the industry to pull it’s finger out and give the people what they want.
