Racing Victoria are expected to officially release the findings of a comprehensive inquiry into Admire Rakti this week, but initial reports from Fairfax Media indicate that the Melbourne Cup favourite died of a heart attack just minutes after finishing last in the great race.

Fairfax report that the inquiry was carried out as a coronial inquest, and involved a series of laboratory tests that came back reporting a heart attack. While speculation of alleged foul play or misadventure was raised over the past weeks, it appears that the death of the horse was a simple tragedy.

Fairfax Media are further reporting that Japanese businessman Riichi Kondo, owner of Admire Rakti, will be able to claim insurance on untimely death based on the reported autopsy results.

Racing Victoria’s chief steward Terry Bailey told the ABC at the time of the horse’s death that Admire Rakti was in good condition and not showing any signs of stress:

“One of the advantages of the internationals is being based at Werribee – these horses are [looked over] by vets everyday and the horse was even examined again on race morning by our vets and trotted up fine and fit as a fiddle”.

More to come.
