Brisbane are hopeful prized recruit Darius Boyd will make his NRL return sooner rather than later after his successful Achilles surgery.
The Broncos said the operation on the ruptured Achilles was completed on Tuesday “without any complications” and the Test flyer would soon begin a recovery expected to take six to nine months.
Boyd suffered the injury in a routine running drill last Friday morning in his first full week of Broncos training since returning from Newcastle.
“If all goes to plan, the international back could well be returning to the playing field as early as May next year,” a Broncos statement said.
Boyd has been buoyed by encouraging words from veteran Justin Hodges, who has returned from not one but two Achilles injuries.
He missed the entire 2010 season when he went down the first time but returned five weeks earlier than expected. He again suffered the injury in 2013, running out in April to help spark Brisbane’s last gasp NRL finals berth.
“He is only 27 and this is his first major operation so he will be fine,” Hodges said.
“The first time I had it done, we didn’t know too much about it. But the last time I came back, I didn’t rush it.
“I rested it a bit more and that worked out well.”
