The producers of sporting paraphernalia have some explaining to do.

As sporting fans, we will do anything possible to show support to our team, regardless of the ironically huge hole it burns in the very pockets we spend hundreds on.

At the forefront of sporting apparel are the multi-billion dollar sporting giant Nike, as well as the likes of Adidas, whose ability to produce the most sought after fan-wear has seen them reach unparalleled popularity and profit.

However, a closer inspection of the prices Nike and closest competitor Adidas expect supporters to pay for these products is nothing short of ludicrous and almost forms the basis of some sort of cruel joke created by the rich businessman against Joe Everyman who just wants to support his or her favourite side in any way possible.

Let me give you an example: the cost of a Brisbane Broncos 2015 home jersey currently sits at a whopping $180 AUD! At this point one is drawn to question whether or not the entire population of Brisbane consists of millionaires.

Contrastingly, the home strip of the recent Asian Champions League champions, the Western Sydney Wanderers (also a Nike branded jersey) would set any budding fan back a comparatively meagre $90 AUD.

So what is it about the Broncos’ jersey that makes it worth double that of the Wanderers’? Is there more demand? Is it lined with solid gold?

The only characteristic boasted by the Broncos jersey but not by that of the Wanderers is that it is a “high quality garment,” which leaves me asking that perhaps people shouldn’t be paying 90 bucks for an A-league kit which isn’t high quality?

All I can say is that manufacturers who charge exorbitant fees for similar apparel certainly have some explaining to do.

How much would you happily spend on your team’s kit? How much is too much? And is there ever a price we wouldn’t pay to support our favourite teams?
