Scott aims for hometown PGA boost

He’s the first to admit his Australian golf swing hasn’t gone to plan but Adam Scott is aiming for a big hometown finish before heading into a long off-season.

Scott believes successfully defending his Australian PGA Championship crown on the Gold Coast this week could be a handy confidence boost as he ponders another assault on golf’s majors in 2015.

The world No.3 finished tied second at the Australian Masters and fifth at the Australian Open, unable to quite recapture the form that brought two victories and a second in his stellar 2013 Down Under swing.

Despite that, Scott is the overwhelming favourite to retain the Joe Kirkwood Cup at Royal Pines, with Australian pair Marc Leishman (47) and John Senden (49) the nearest to him in the field in terms of world rankings.

“It’s not exactly what I had in mind,” Scott said.

“I’ve played well but got off to poor starts. I’d like to change that this week and get off to a good start.

“It’d be nice to finish the year off with a win and to defend the title always feels good and would give me a little confidence boost going into next year.”

This week’s event will be Scott’s last before he takes a two-month break.

The 34-year-old will stay in Australia during that time, with a decision on his new permanent caddy among the foremost items on his to-do list.

While his annual schedule is structured around preparing for the four majors, Scott hasn’t ruled out returning to Australia’s big three events next year.

“I’d like to come back every year and play. It may or may not always be the case but that’s certainly my goal,” he said.

“It’s home … any excuse is a good one for me.

“My schedule’s fine. I’m happy with it. Next year won’t be much different. I’ll be starting a bit later but that’s not much different to past years either.

“I’m just going to get myself in the best form possible for Augusta and then take it from there.

“I’d certainly like to get myself into serious contention again in all four majors. I’d like to think I’ve got a chance of winning at least one and hopefully more.”
