I'll have to do better to win: Scott

Adam Scott has warned the revised Royal Pines course is ripe for plunder.

Scott shot a four-under par 68 in Thursday’s Australian PGA Championship opening round but wasn’t getting too excited, saying he’ll need plenty more low scoring if he’s to retain the title.

Last year Scott started with a six-under 65 on the then par-71 course and the world No.3 believes his winning total of 14-under is unlikely to be enough this year.

“I’ve got a feeling we’re going to have to do better than that,” he said.

“I didn’t really make a ton of putts today. If you have a hot day with the putter you can certainly get into eight-under in a day, that’s not unrealistic here.”

After his recent poor starts at the Masters and the Open proved too much to overcome, Scott was just relieved to find himself near the top of the leaderboard after the first round.

“Certainly (it’s not quite as demanding a golf course as what we’ve seen in the other weeks and we had beautiful conditions this morning, so we’ve somewhat taken advantage of that,” Scott said.

“It was a pretty solid start. I can always find reason to be better but I think I’ll take that, considering the starts I’ve got off to the last couple of weeks.”
