At the end of my last article I said the San Francisco 49ers needed to win their next three games or faced a very long eight months of waiting.

Those eight months have officially started following the Niners’ elimination from playoff contention.

This season was a disaster. The Niners started so well but then came Thanksgiving. To say the Niners were bad in that game is an understatement. They were horrific.

When the owner of your team says, “Thank you #49ersfaithful for coming out strong tonight. This performance wasn’t acceptable. I apologize for that.” It’s a clear indication of how terrible they were. They lost 19-3.

Later they lost to Oakland – Oakland’s first win over the Niners since 2002.

Earlier in the year the Niners allowed the Bears to have their equal fourth biggest comeback when they lost to them 28-20. And in Week 9 they did the unthinkable.

The Niners were down 13-10 with 10 seconds left and a timeout. The Niners should hand the Ball to Frank Gore. Then there are two possible results: either Gore gets a touchdown and the Niners win, or Gore is stopped. If the latter occurs then the Niners call their timeout, bring Phil Dawson on and have him kick a field goal to send it into overtime.

Instead Colin Kaepernick attempted to do a quarterback sneak, but he fumbled the ball. The Rams recovered and the game was over.

So what do the Niners do now? Keep Jim Harbaugh. No, I’m not crazy. The guy has three NFC Championships and a Super Bowl loss.

Besides, Bill Walsh had bad seasons. In 1982 after the Niners won Super Bowl XVI his team went 3-6 in a season reduced to nine games due to strike action. He then led them to the NFC Championship Game the following year, where they lost, and between 1985-1988 they lost three post-season games. Yet he stayed on as head coach until his 1988 retirement.

Harbaugh should be given the same opportunity as Bill Walsh. Team owner Jed York should give him another season to make the playoffs. If he doesn’t next season, then sack him.
