My historic day in local cricket

I write this article not about any international or domestic game. This is about local cricket that will hit the heart of the purists out there.

Last Saturday the team that I captain was going out to bat in the chase of 190 after being 1/3 at stumps on Day 1.

We got off to a good start, Andrew Gray and Brendan Doyle leading the way with a 50-run partnership until Gray lost his wicket, followed by another.

With the score at 3/64, it brought Brendan’s son Nathan at a young age of 14 to the crease. That began a day everyone playing and watching that game won’t forget.

Nathan got off to a shaky start against a good bowling attack before settling down. Brendan got to 50 and they got to tea unscathed with us being 3/90.

After tea we saw the magic happen. We got the 50 run partnership up, along with Brendan scoring his second ton this season.

When the 100-run stand was brought up I knew it was a special day, seeing a great father-son knock but that wasn’t even the half of it.

We took the lead soon after. Nathan was also approaching 50. which he didn’t take too much longer to get to.

Me and opposing captain Shaun Brown agreed play until 5:30pm. The Doyles brought up the 150 together in that time. Then, in what was supposed to be the last over of the day, Brendan went out second ball of it to go out on 142 a superb knock and a stand with his son of 198.

In the last ball of that over Nathan hit a six to take him to 95. After discussions took place, both captains agreed to go on for the remaining seven overs to see if Nathan could reach his maiden ton.

It was hard going but with four overs remaining he brought up his ton to the delight of the team.

It was a privilege to be there to watch that take place from what the club believes to be a first in a father-son making 100 each in the same game.

It is a day that we won’t forget, reminding us of the beauty of club cricket.
