Australian cyclist Jack Bobridge will make his hour world record attempt on January 31 at Melbourne’s Darebin velodrome.

Bobridge will try to break one of track cycling’s most prestigious records on the last day of the national championships at the Darebin International Sports Centre.

His date confirmation means a massive weekend for Australian cycling.

Bobridge’s record attempt will be on a Saturday, the day before the inaugural Cadel Evans Great Ocean Rd race.

It is Evans’ last event before he retires from professional cycling.

Austrian Matthias Brandle set the world hour mark of 51.852km two months ago.

The hour record is suddenly become prominent again in cycling after world governing body UCI changed the rules earlier this year surrounding the mark.

Popular German Jens Voigt ended his career by breaking the record and Matthias quickly broke it again.

Bobridge’s attempt will be the first of a series of hour rides next year.

Compatriot Rohan Dennis has confirmed he will go for the world record next February, while Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins and fellow British rider Alex Dowsett are also reportedly keen.

Bobridge, who now rides for the domestic Budget Forklifts road team, hopes to gain a start in the Tour Down Under as a key part of the buildup to his hour ride.

He hopes to be picked in the composite UniSA team for the January 18-25 Adelaide race.
