Dhoni, Smith play down cricket behaviour

The confrontations weren’t as heated as those in Adelaide, but animosity between Australia and India was hard to miss in the second Test.

David Warner, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli were all fined for their roles in two separate incidents at Adelaide Oval.

The trio were again in the thick of it at the Gabba.

Dhawan exchanged sharp words with Warner and Shane Watson when the teams walked off at lunch on day four.

“They were just talking about the IPL. Davey and Shikhar play together, so I think there was a little bit of banter,” Australia stand-in skipper Steve Smith said.

Dhawan has history with Watson, having mocked the allrounder’s injury during a one-dayer last year.

Fielders Kohli and Rohit Sharma both sledged Mitchell Johnson in the first innings of the second Test, while Warner was given a send-off when dismissed in the second dig.

Smith and India counterpart MS Dhoni were content with the conduct of both sides.

“I think it’s fine. It’s always a tough battle,” Smith said.

“We know there’s a line there that can’t be crossed.

“Hopefully the boys continue to stay on the right side of that line.”

Dhoni said the Test was played in the “spirit of the game”.

“If there’s anything that’s within the boundaries of the guidelines of the game, I’m happy with it,” he said.

“Because you want a bit of aggression in the game.

“As long as they don’t cross the boundary it’s alright, because it brings a bit more entertainment for the spectators.

Smith was run out in the second dig after bowler Varun Aaron got in his path, but the 25-year-old downplayed any anger over the incident.

“I just didn’t see him and ran into him, didn’t I? It wasn’t ideal,” Smith said.

“I would’ve liked to have been there at the end. I guess that’s cricket, and I’m just happy we got home at the end.”

In addition to the on-field incidents, Murali Vijay chided the home side’s bowlers for “sulking” in the heat on day one.

Mitch Marsh (hamstring), Josh Hazlewood (cramps) and Mitchell Starc (ribs and back) had all been injured on a day of heightened humidity.
