The Sydney Thunder open their 2014/15 Big Bash Leage campaign at home against the Brisbane Heat tonight. Join The Roar for live scores and updates at 7:10pm (AEDT)

The Thunder will be aiming for a semi-final berth this year, after acquiring Eoin Morgan and Jacques Kallis during the off season. The Thunder have garnered a reputation as the lowly franchise of the league, and it’s well deserved.

The Thunder mustered just one victory last season, and will be looking to shake their poor reputation starting against the Heat.

Mike Hussey was the lone standout for a lackluster Thunder side last year. Hussey accumulated 258 runs at a strike rite of 131 and averaged 37 per innings.

Hussey’s individual performance was good enough for the sixth highest run scorer in the BBL in 2013/2014. The Thunder will be looking to Hussey to continue that form this year if they want to clinch a finals berth.

The Brisbane Heat will be looking to build upon a solid 2013/14 campaign and push for a post season appearance. The Heat were perilously close to securing a semi-final berth but fell just one win short of doing so.

Marquee players Andrew Flintoff and Daniel Vettori will spearhead this year’s quest for the franchise.

Dan Christian may be one to keep an eye on. The gamely all rounder is putting together a strong Sheffield Shield campaign – if he finds consistency with bat and ball in the BBL, it may be the missing piece the Heat have needed to put themselves over the top.

Prediction: The Thunder will use last year’s poor performance as motivation and get off to a perfect start for 2014/15.
