Hobart Hurricanes host the Sydney Sixers in Hobart, and a win to either team will propel them to the top of the ladder early in BBL04. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:10pm AEDT.
The Hurricanes started the BBL season in great style with an emphatic victory on Saturday night against Melbourne Stars. They played a well balanced side with six recognised bowlers; two quicks Hilfenhuis and Mennie, two spinners in Doherty and Boyce and two allrounders Sammy and Gulbis.
Sammy was sensational. The West Indies T20 Captain smashed 29 off one over to extend the score to 190, and then backed up in the field with a great backpedalling outfield catch.
The Sixers, on the other hand, have a similarly balanced side and proved too good for the Renegades in their first outing of the year. However, the Sixers are restricted in who they can pick, with international duties taking Steve Smith, Brad Haddin, Dwayne Smith, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon out of their team.
Last season the two teams met in Sydney and Steve Smith led the Sixers to a comfortable win. They have also travelled to Hobart and defeated the Hurricanes in the BBL01 semi final. These results should give them confidence to do it again.
Hobart will be anxious to showcase their stars in front of an adoring home crowd. Alex Hales missed out in Melbourne and will want to get going this time, while Sammy was unbelievable. He is the type of character who is infectious and gives the Hurricanes a huge boost in pursuit of their first title.
Sydney Sixers were best served by Nick Maddinson with the bat, but he has a tendency to start well in tournaments and then tail off in form. The experience of Brett Lee will still be a handful for the Hurricane batsmen.
You get the feeling Hobart are building something here and want to return to the Champions League again where they made the semi-finals in their last appearance. Will there be a Hales-storm in Hobart and will the Sixers get Sammied like the Melbourne Stars?.
This may breed a bit of over confidence and I just sense the Sixers sneaking into Hobart and getting the points in a close one to deflate the home crowd.
Prediction: Sixers to go two from two and top of the ladder.
Ever the pessimist, I don’t think the Hurricanes can play two good games in a row and carry on the momentum from Saturday night. Will I be proved wrong or right?
