Nick Kalmar has swapped one A-League expansion club for another, leaving Melbourne City for Western Sydney Wanderers.

Kalmar, who featured in Melbourne Heart’s inaugural match, has been frozen out under City manager John van ‘t Schip.

Kalmar did not feature for City in the A-League this season, playing his last match for the club in the FFA Cup loss to Sydney FC.

The 27-year-old was effectively replaced by Erik Paartalu as City’s holding midfielder and told by the Dutch coach he needed to find another club.

Now he’ll suit up for the Asian Champions, initially on an injury-replacement contract for Brendon Santalab and then as an Asian Champions League group stage player in 2015.

Wanderers chief executive John Tsatsimas said an injury to Kearyn Baccus encouraged the club to move for Kalmar.

“Nick is a quality player who we have been monitoring for some time,” he said.

“Kearyn’s injury is disappointing for the young man especially given his recent performances in the A-League and at the FIFA Club World Cup.

“We have the opportunity to bring in Nick Kalmar who is a quality acquisition and he is sure to serve us well in the lead up to what will be our club’s busiest schedule to date.”

His contract has been terminated mutually by player and club, allowing the transfer to occur.

Tony Popovic’s side are reported to seeking major changes to their playing squad during the January A-League transfer window.
