US Baseball legend Wade Boggs has sent a rather un-PC message to the world via actor Charlie Day, claiming that he drank 107 beers on a trip across the United States.

If true, the number makes David Boon’s mark of 52 beers on a long-haul flight to London before the 1989 Ashes series seem paltry.

Let us just say one thing to put it to bed – we don’t want to celebrate anyone drinking that much alcohol. It’s very, very dangerous to do so.

Boggs’ drinking has long been speculated about. He never spoke about it publicly in much detail, though rumours of him consuming 50-60 beers on flights across America do the rounds constantly. The daily ‘record’ was assumed to be around 70 beers, but in a moment of weakness (or strength) he confessed another number to Day while on set for his show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

“He told me that the actual number… he pulled me aside and said, ‘Charlie, really, it was 107.”

Boggs claims to have consumed the 107 beers on his way across the US, including some before reaching the airport, in the lounge, on the plane, on the layover, and then out and about on the town that night.

If it’s true, it is remarkable for a number of reasons.

First of all, how did he not pass out, or worse, before reaching a century of cans? It’s a bafflingly large amount of alcohol to drink, and we recommend no one try it, or even thinks about trying it.

Second of all, how did he recover in time to play any time in the next few days after that effort?

Boggs is, after all, an MLB hall of famer with 118 home runs, a batting average of .328 and 1,014 runs batted in a career that lasted the majority of two decades and three franchises.

It all seems pretty unlikely. We plugged the numbers into this blood alcohol calculator, which assuming that the beers was full strength (4.9%) and that they were 375mL cans, and he was drinking from 6am until 11pm (17 hours), came up with the following results.

Alcohol Ingested: 1553.24g
Alcohol Remaining: 1434.24g
Blood Alcohol Content: 2.348% (Approx. reading only)

It summarily reads:

“You should be dead by now!”

Indeed.
