Bernard Tomic begins his 2015 Australian Open campaign against Tobias Kamke of Germany. Join The Roar for live scores from around 3:00pm (AEDT).

At 22 years of age, Bernard Tomic is approaching a crucial the period of his career. Since reaching his highest world ranking of 27 in 2012, the young Aussie has battled for results and enters this year’s Open ranked 71st.

His best result at Melbourne Park was also back in 2012, when he reached the fourth round.

Tomic has a lot of work to do to earn back the respect of the fans he frustrated at the Australian Open last year. After drawing Rafael Nadal in the opening round, Tomic was quick to retire hurt with a groin injury, much to the disapproval of the Australian crowd, who let Tomic hear their frustration.

Quite simply, Tomic needs to start landing some results. But more than that, he needs to show pride and fight in every point of every game that he plays at his home Grand Slam.

Even if he fails to make much of a splash in the competition, if he fights for every point, the Australian crowd will at least appreciate the effort.

His opponent today enters the competition ranked 98th and with the knowledge that he has only once made it to the third round of a Grand Slam (from 20 attempts).

Not surprisingly then, Tomic enters the match as a red-hot favourite coming off some strong form at the Sydney International, where he reached the quarter finals, eventually going down to Gilles Muller in two sets.

Muller had a night out with his serve in that match, so Tomic will not be too disheartened by the result.
