Sharapova heads into the tournament as one of the heavy favourites. The French Open champion in 2014, Sharapova reached the fourth round in every other major of the year, a performance that would have disappointed her as one of the most consistent performers on the Women’s tour.
She will be very confident heading into this match against Martic, ranked 184 in the world, having not lost so far in 2015. Many good judges are seeing her as the form player heading into this year’s tournament, with doubts surrounding the fitness and drive of old foe Serena Williams.
Another thing that should give her confidence is the fact that Martic has never been ranked above 42, while Sharapova has remained in the top ten in the women’s game for the best part of the last decade.
That meeting was four years ago, but Martic’s ranking has plummeted since her peak in 2012, and she looks to be an easy warm up for Sharapova.
