White turns focus to World Cup dream

Melbourne Stars captain Cameron White was left looking for answers after a fourth straight Big Bash League semi-final loss by his team as he continues to hold out hope of a World Cup call-up next month.

The Stars have qualified for the semi-finals in all four BBL seasons but have been downed by the Scorchers in three of them, including an 18-run loss on Sunday at the WACA Ground.

The Stars restricted the Scorchers to 7-144 off their 20 overs, and they started well to be 1-67 before going on to lose 4-21 in the next six overs.

They were eventually all out for 126.

White was not interested in making any excuses despite the absence of Glenn Maxwell, James Faulkner, David Hussey and Marcus Stoinis.

“Obviously we have something that needs to be looked at. We can’t get to this stage four times in-a-row and front up and do the same stuff again next year. It’s clearly disappointing,” White said.

“It’s just frustrating because when this team loses, we know we haven’t played our best. If we do play our best like you have seen over the last four years, we win more than we lose. It’s always frustrating when you don’t play as well as well as you can.”

White hasn’t been selected in Australia’s World Cup squad for the tournament starting next month, but would be amongst the candidates if captain Michael Clarke doesn’t overcome his hamstring injury.

It is a result he’d be well pleased with particularly given he failed to grab his chance with a second-ball duck during Australia’s win over England on Friday at Bellerive.

“I do have hope still. It was nice to obviously get an opportunity the other night which I didn’t take either,” White said.

“I’m not in the 15-man squad at the moment but hopefully maybe at some stage I might be. The selectors showed the other night that Shaun (Marsh) and I are the back-up at this stage and that’s where it’s at.”
