Former NRL stay Jarryd Hayne will announce this week that he has signed a futures contract with NFL franchise the Detroit Lions, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph.
Hayne is reportedly set to sign on as a development player with the Lions, who have a strong history of player development.
Rumours are swirling that he will be signed as a running back, but where he plays is still to be determined.
Hayne has reportedly turned down interest from NFL clubs the San Francisco 49ers and 2015 Super Bowl participants the Seattle Seahawks, but saw the Lions as a superior option for his development as a player.
Hayne has been in intense training as he looks to get his body up to the rigours of NFL football. He has been working on his explosive power and sprint.
Hayne shocked the rugby league world last October when he announced he would give up his lucrative contract with the Parramatta Eels to attempt to fulfil his dream of playing in the NFL.
There has since been a chorus of support for Hayne in his efforts to make it in one of the richest football leagues in the world.
According to the Telegraph, Telstra has secured rights to film a documentary of Hayne’s journey in making it in the NFL.
At 27, and with a futures contract seemingly in his grasp, what remains unclear is whether Hayne will make it as a professional NFL player.
Securing this contract is the first step.
