Cameron confident of keeping young Giants

GWS coach Leon Cameron is confident the host of talented young Giants coming off contract will stay around to finish the job they have started, rather than head to rival AFL clubs.

Speculation over the future of a crop of young players who are unsigned for 2016 is bound to be a recurring theme through their 2015 campaign.

Melbourne newspaper the Herald Sun on Wednesday referred to six talented 21-year-old players who have yet to re-sign with the club.

The list comprises 2013 All-Australian forward Jeremy Cameron, Adam Treloar, Stephen Coniglio, Devon Smith, Dylan Shiel and Will Hoskin-Elliott.

All six have played through the Giants `first three seasons and all bar injury hit Cameron and Coniglio finished in the top ten of their best and fairest last year.

Cameron and Smith are the club’s two all-time leading goalkickers.

Coach Cameron believes those players will want to be around for the good times after having done the hard work to establish a club that has won just nine games.

“We’re very confident because of the place and the culture that we’re building that these players will want to be a part of it,” Leon Cameron said.

“Especially when a lot of the players we are talking about have been here from the start.

“They’ve done the hard yards, they’ve seen what it’s been about.

“They’ve been smacked around the ears, they start to see some great light at the end of the tunnel.”

The Giants will have their first intra-club hitout of 2015 on Friday.

Prize recruits Ryan Griffen and Joel Patfull are scheduled to play, along with first round draft picks, Jarrod Pickett and Paul Ahern.

Key forward Jonathon Patton will return to the club at the end of the week after spending time in the United States working under a renowned American knee specialist.

Patton is recovering from a second knee reconstruction and remains on track to return in mid-season.

“He’s had a little bit of a different sort of training (in the US), gymnastics, strengthening of the knees and landing techniques,” Cameron said.

“We feel as though it’s a great opportunity for Jon to not only to have a different training regime for a week or so, but also a changeup from that arduous pre-season rehabilitating day in day out.

“We’re really happy with how he’s progressing.

“You can only go on what they show out at the training track and all the signs are in a very positive direction for Jon.

“I look forward to him getting involved in full on training with our main group in the next week or two.
