Reward our best NRL players with bumper contracts

With the NRL’s annual report coming out it looks like the game is in great health.

The imperative for the sport has been to get its cash stashed into the bank so it can earn money off that investment eternally. For the rainy days and whimsical purchases, right?

Well, it’s also a good buffer so the sport need not dig into funds that are earmarked for normal running. It’s giving rugby league a solid base.

But the players must be wondering about when it’s going to be their turn. For example, Greg Inglis. I’m sure they will negotiate a new deal after 2017.

But what of our best players? Here’s a proposal for keeping them in league and I think you’re going to like it.

There should be a modest increase game wide to player salaries. But for the top 25 players, statistically based off their performances in the prior two years, or strategically desirable players, they could be topped up centrally by the NRL.

If the NRL have an extra $20 or $30 million from betting intake then they could begin this next season. It’s not cheating the cap. This is irrespective of which club you play for. So if the pool is $25 million a season that’s a one million reach on average.

Oops. Am I being too generous? Well, start the pool smaller than $25 million then.

I think we need to act now. A player like Inglis may get $800,000 for the season, let’s say he gets another $100,000 or so for extra work, then $120,000 for State of Origin and another $100,000 for Test matches.

Gee, that’s a fair whack. But it’s not enough in the market seemingly.

In return the top 25 may have to sign ambassador roles, be asigned to a lower level club, do promotional work as needed, do interviews for the game after being briefed by NRL officials and various small things like that. They may be involved in future school coaching initiatives, and of course they would have to promise to stay out of trouble.

Let’s consider this, Roarers.
