Greg Inglis is obviously feeling the effects of a tough training regime, and flights to and from England for the World Club Series. Even for a player of his calibre, it is unsurprising that he’s tired.

Like the Melbourne Storm before them, this Souths team will battle fatigue and burnout as the season progresses. But never before have I heard a club captain discuss future contracts because they feel ‘tired’.

I don’t blame Inglis for this – other factors are burning him out.

Firstly, the NRL created a fund to keep top players in the game, which is kind of insulting to the next tier of players and therefore divisive.

Secondly, it’s Inglis’ manager’s job to ensure his client gets as much money as possible. This leads to statements in the press that the player is tired, can get better offers elsewhere, and might leave unless they are heavily compensated.

If Inglis wants to leave rugby league, let him go. He is at the top of his game, no doubt, but his replacement is out there and ready to take his opportunity.

The NRL created a fund to retain players with the best of intentions, but avarice always wins. I’m not blaming GI, but the system which encourages silly storylines to encourage gain at any level by middlemen.

On the flipside, Inglis owes the league a lot, especially after the Storm fiasco.
