Australia all-rounder Shane Watson has been dropped by Australia selectors for their World Cup clash against Afghanistan in Perth.

Watson has had a lean run of form with the bat in recent one day internationals, making just 245 runs in his 9 matches this summer at an average of 27.

He has been under pressure to maintain his spot at the top of the order, with the likes of George Bailey waiting in the wings.

He will be replaced in the side by James Faulkner, who has become an invaluable player for Australia in his two years in the side.

His finishing skills have been widely praised, having dug Australia out of a few situation with some ice-cool performances at the end of the innings.

Youngster Pat Cummins has also been left out of the Australian side with injury, replaced by fellow quick Josh Hazlewood.

Australia will bat first against the associate nation after Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bowl.
