AFL's Pride Cup a fantastic stand against homophobia

I have a number of gay friends, and unfortunately, despite the fact that it is 2015, they are still cautious celebrating their sexuality with complete confidence.

They still have trouble being themselves in front of everyone they meet.

What a bitch of a life having to constantly wear a mask that hides the real you.

But the AFL is doing its part in helping many be more at ease with who they really are.

The AFL have announced a ‘gay pride’ game to be played this season that will go a long way to addressing homophobia. Footy’s first Pride Cup match will be played between Sydney and Fremantle during this month’s NAB Challenge.

A permanent fixture celebrating sexual diversity in the season proper are said to be in the works.

Critics were quick to point out that they do not like the idea of any themed round, such as the extremely successful and popular indigenous round. But what these people are really saying is that they are homophobic.

How sad that in this day and age there are those who do not feel comfortable with men wanting to be with men. Would these same people feel the same if it was their own son pursuing a life with another man rather than a women? And if so, would these same people abandon their sons?

The AFL’s decision to promote and celebrate gay rights is both honourable and brave. It is not a waste of time nor is it attempt to gain cheep points as some critics would say.

It is simply an organisation understanding and appreciating that while everyone should be seen as equal, unfortunately it is not quite as simple as that, and there needs to be a push along.

Will we soon have the first AFL footballer come out and say with gusto that they are gay and proud? I hope so.

Because the sooner it occurs the quicker those who are uncomfortable with the concept can digest the information and then hopefully get on with the job of treating everyone with the same respect.
