Ireland will be looking to keep their quarter final hopes alive at the 2015 Cricket World Cup when they take on Zimbabwe at Hobart this afternoon. Join The Roar for live coverage from 2:30pm AEDT.

After comprehensively losing to South Africa on Tuesday, this is a must-win match for Ireland if they are to make the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

If Pakistan lose to South Africa today, Ireland need to win today, beat Pakistan in their final match, and have a superior run rate overall to the Pakistanis to make the quarter final. While it’s a big ask, it isn’t impossible.

Winning today is the first step, and they face a team desperate for a win.

The World Cup for Zimbabwe has been one of ‘what ifs’.

They had thier chances against both South Africa and Pakistan and could have turned the group on its head if they won those contests.

While Zimbabwe are still alive in the group, they will need to win today, beat India in their final match, and rely on other results to make the quarters.

In the first ever match between these two, at the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies, they played out a tie as Zimbabwe. Since then Zimbabwe has won three out of the last four contests, but in their last match, in Zimbabwe, Ireland won by 20 runs.

The key to today’s contest is Zimbabwe’s bowlers against Ireland’s batsmen. The African nation has struggled to take wickets in this tournament, taking just 20 wickets in four games, at an average of five a match. And with their batting line-up struggling to make more than 280 in a match, it will be difficult to chase down a large total if Ireland’s batsmen take control.

Prediction
Expect a high-scoring contest and Ireland to win by about 20 runs to keep their quarter-final hopes alive.
