Match Result

scoreline: Cowboys 4-28 Roosters

The Roosters make a big statement in round 1 as they secure a commanding 28-4 victory over a Cowboys side that is very difficult to beat at home. Pearce and Maloney superb. Tuivasa-Sheck a constant menace at the back. Tupou very safe. Cordner very strong upfront along with the rest of the Roosters pack. In attack and defence the Roosters hardly put a foot wrong. Complete performance from the chooks.

Match Preview

Premiership contenders collide tonight as the North Queensland Cowboys host the Sydney Roosters in a re-match of last year’s memorable NRL semi-final. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 9:00pm (AEDT).

The opening round of the 2015 season features some enticing match-ups but tonight’s contest between the Cowboys and Roosters promises to be an early contender for game of the season.

The last time these two teams met, the Roosters prevailed 31-30 over a gallant Cowboys outfit that managed to claw their way back from 30-nil down to level at 30-all.

North Queensland nearly pulled off an incredible comeback victory only for Johnathan Thurston’s try to be disallowed right at the death due to a knock on in the lead-up from Robert Lui.

Cowboys fans and players alike still feel they were robbed of a place in last year’s preliminary final and they will be keen to get some revenge by defeating the Roosters tonight.

North Queensland should be expected to come out all guns blazing. On paper, they are a legitimate premiership threat and should cause the Roosters enormous problems if they turn up with their best form.

Johnathan Thurston, Michael Morgan, Robert Lui and Rory Kostjasyn form a great attacking spine for the Cowboys. They will be very difficult for Sydney to contain if North Queensland are able to dominate upfront.

If the Roosters are to come away with a win, they will need the likes of Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Boyd Cordner, Aiden Guerra and Sam Moa to chip in with strong performances against representative stars Matt Scott and Jason Taumalolo.

The head-to-head match-up between Mitchell Pearce and Thurston should be a beauty. Pearce finished 2014 in career-best form and he will need to pick up from where he left off if he hopes to match one of the all-time greats.

Throw in the return of Blake Ferguson and tonight’s contest has all the ingredients to become a classic. The Cowboys at home though will be very difficult to upstage.

Cowboys by 6.
