The reason behind Lankan Rupee’s disappointing sixth in Saturday’s Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) have been revealed by trainer Mick Price.

Price explained that an examination on Monday afternoon revealed the champion sprinter had torn muscles in his chest, while also showing signs of inflammation and stifles.

Price however believes that his sprinter will still be fit to race to attempt back-to-back victories in next month’s $2.5m Group 1 TJ Smith (1200m) at Randwick during The Championships.

“While he trotted up sound yesterday (Sunday), my chiropractor went over him this morning and he has a torn off-front superficial pectoral muscle,” Price said.

“Both of his stifles were showing signs of inflammation so he’ll have both of them treated as well as his pectoral muscle treated.”

“Timing-wise he should be fine so he remains on course for the T.J. Smith,” he said.

The trainer was also quick to admit the pace hadn’t suited his mount, and heaped praise on Brazilian superstar Joao Moreira for his ride on Brazen Beau.

“I think Joao Moreira (on the winner Brazen Beau) out-rode the other jockeys,” he said.

“The first 400m was run six or seven lengths slower than last year’s Newmarket and I think my horse pulled because of the slow sectionals.

“Regardless of that he was disappointing and his last 200m was that of a horse whose action was not right.”

The Group 1 TJ Smith (1200m) will be held during The Championships, on Saturday, 11 April 2015.
