Well played, experts, well played indeed. A solid Round 5 saw most of us jagging five and six correct tips out of the seven games in the round.

Plus another perfect run of powerplays meant that all the red was restricted to… well, my bloody column again!

Biltong’s seven-point round extended his lead out to two points overall, while it’s a similar gap from Digger and Elisha down to me at the bottom of the table. (Please come back, Scott!)

There are some cracking games coming up in Round 6, bookended nicely by the Highlanders-Hurricanes under the roof in Dunedin on Friday night, and the Waratahs-Brumbies blockbuster in the sunshine in Sydney on Sunday afternoon.

Note, just the six games this weekend; the Blues and Reds are relishing the fact they can’t lose this weekend…

Biltong
Tips: Highlanders, Rebels, Crusaders (PP), Bulls, Sharks, Waratahs.

“I am going to be brave and call for six home wins this weekend. I know there will be away wins, but I am gutless and not prepared to gamble who it will be. My powerplay goes to the Crusaders, as that must be a sure thing.

“Where I could be wrong is Hurricanes v Highlanders, Rebels v Lions, Sharks v Chiefs, and Waratahs v Brumbies. Hmm maybe I should have gone for six away wins.”

Brett’s note: Outstanding arguing, Biltong! Compelling in every way!

Paddy Effeney
Tips: Hurricanes, Rebels, Crusaders (PP), Bulls, Chiefs, Waratahs.

“I confused my failure in the NRL and thought I was terrible in this too. Apparently not.

“This week, I’m feeling in a home teams kind of mood. Then I had a change of heart two-thirds of the way through that thought.

“Accordingly, I’m tipping the Hurricanes, Rebels, Crusaders, Bulls, Chiefs, and Waratahs. I think the Waratahs can bounce back from a surprise loss at home, during the day, though I think that’s the toughest game of the round to pick. My powerplay is on the Crusaders.”

Spiro Zavos
Tips: Hurricanes, Rebels, Crusaders (PP), Bulls, Chiefs, Brumbies.

“I will select on form this round. This is most difficult with the Highlanders-Hurricanes match. The Highlanders are at home and have great form. However, the Hurricanes have won all their matches, including two in South Africa. So, I am picking the Hurricanes with their better pack.

“I am also picking the Chiefs to back up on their first win in South Africa. And the Brumbies should be too strong all over the field against the Waratahs, even though it is a home game for the Waratahs.”

Diggercane
Tips: Hurricanes, Rebels, Crusaders (PP), Bulls, Chiefs, Brumbies.

“The Lions will be no match for the Rebellion in Melbourne, while I have found faith again in the Crusaders who may have my powerplay against the Cheetahs. The Bulls will defend Pretoria against the invading Force while the Sharks defence has been far too porous to consider picking them over the Chiefs.

“I will be backing the form horse from Australia against the Waratahs, even in Sydney.

“And the irrepressible Hurricanes will march into Forsyth and destroy the Highlanders, Malakai and all”

Elisha Pearce
Tips: Highlanders, Rebels, Crusaders (PP), Bulls, Chiefs, Waratahs.

“The only pick I really got wrong last week was the Cheetahs, so I’m happy with that round. The Tahs pick was obviously a homer pick so it doesn’t really count. On to week six!

“Let’s speed through the easy games: The Bulls should take care of business against the Force. And Crusaders get my powerplay because they’ll take five points from the Cheetahs (although they’re secretly a decent travelling team the last few years.

“Now for the tough ones: I’m going with mostly home teams this week. So that gives me the Highlanders over the Canes, Rebels over the Lions and Waratahs over Brumbies (I expect that series to be split, so this week will set up my next pick in this series). The away team I’ll take is the Chiefs over the Sharks. Chiefs with too much excellence all over the park.”

Brett’s note: Sorry mate, moral or metaphorical victories don’t count in this comp. You got the Tahs wrong – “really”!

Brett McKay
Tips: Highlanders, Rebels, Crusaders, Bulls (PP), Chiefs, Brumbies.

I was feeling pretty good about these tips when I scribbled them down earlier in the week. Then the enormity of picking against the unbeaten Hurricanes sank in, and I’m now rather nervous.

Rebels-Crusaders-Bulls are easy; maybe too easy. My current form almost guarantees two of them will lose. Bulls can have my Powerplay just to be different (and to ensure they’re one of the two losers).

I’m sticking with the Chiefs, but news of ‘team Williams’ – Sonny Bill and Tim Nanai- – being in doubt has me very, very worried. The Sharks are playing uninspiring rugby currently, so I’m sweating on that continuing.

And Brumbies for the win in Sydney. Really annoyed I can’t get up there for it, but it shapes as blockbuster. Someone reinforce the servers in preparation for the fallout!
