MATCH RESULT:

FULL TIME: Adelaide United 2 – 2 Melbourne Victory

What a game of football. Adelaide dominated the majority, but they could not come away with the three points. Melbourne will feel like they have escaped death.

It started with early dominance for the Reds, but it was an unstoppable shot from Fahid Ben Khalfallah that opened the scoring against the run of play to put the Victory up.

It was more of the same still, and Adelaide found the net through Sanchez after a brilliant ball from Cirio to get their reward and put the Reds level before half time.

Adelaide came out dominant in the second half again, and continued to pile on the pressure. Several chances for them were squandered but it was a deflected ball from McGowan off Broxham that forced Coe the wrong way and put the Reds up for the first time in the game.

When it looked like Adelaide would run away with it, it was Victory legend Archie Thompson that shoved a knife through the hearts of the Reds almost immediately after.

A brilliant ball in from Finkler found Thompson, who touched the ball past Galekovic and edged the ball into the net from a difficult angle.

Intense from start to finish, but the spoils will be shared. Adelaide disappointed that they didn’t get the three points, but they managed to send a message to the entire A-League.

MATCH PREVIEW

Adelaide United play host to the Melbourne Victory in a clash which could see either team end up on top of the A-League table. Join us on The Roar from 7:30pm (AEDT) (AEDT) for live scores and commentary.

Coming off an unconvincing, come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Central Coast Mariners, Adelaide United will be looking to put recent inconsistent performances behind them and continue on a winning trend.

Under manager Josep Gombau the Reds have been unsuccessful in their last five meeting against the Melbourne Victory, losing three and drawing two.

However Adelaide midfielder Jimmy Jeggo believes his side are out to make a statement against Kevin Muscat’s side.

“A lot of the boys are looking at it as an opportunity to really stamp our mark going into these last couple of rounds and into the finals,” he said.

Coming off a 3-0 whitewash of the Western Sydney Wanderers, Melbourne Victory have found themselves two points from top spot on the ladder with a game in hand. With only a few games left in the season, the Victory are in a great position to steal top spot in a season which has been remarkably close from start to finish.

Defensive midfielder Carl Valeri has stressed how important the clash in Adelaide really is for his side.

“Adelaide is a fantastic team and we’re 100 per cent focused on that game,” he said.

“Every game’s a big game from now on, because it’s so close on the table. Every game’s a final.”

Victory playmaker Fahid Ben Khalfallah will be the one Adelaide need to watch, the Tunisian playmaker has caused major problems for every team he has faced, and managed to find the net a few times in the process.

The last time these two sides met was back in November of last year. Five goals in the first half saw the Victory hold out for a stunning 3-2 win over the Reds at AAMI Park.
