It was a match for Australian football fans to remember for more than just the result as the Socceroos put in a strong performance against the world champions, Germany, to secure a 2-2 draw at Fritz-Walter-Stadion in Kaiserslautern.

With the match poised at 1-1 entering the second half, the Socceroos were awarded a free kick two metres outside the box in the 50th minute.

Continuing on from his form during the Asian Cup, the Socceroos’ skipper Mile Jedinak stepped up to the spot to take the kick.

Facing the world’s best defenders and with few Australian fans in the crowd, Jedinak struck the ball with the confidence of a man that expected no result other than a goal, curling the shot into the top right hand corner to give the Socceroos a 2-1 lead.

Australia would hold onto the lead right up until the 81st minute when Lukas Podolski drew the home side level.
