The left armer took his wickets at an astonishing average of 10.18, and an economy of 3.5.

In a tournament dominated by the bat, where runs were scored at a rate of over 88 runs per 100 deliveries for every match of the entire tournament, Starc was a clear standout with ball in hand.

Both Starc and Boult won the widespread acclaim of the cricketing public with fast, swinging deliveries at the start of innings, and searing yorkers at the end.

Starc’s best bowling performance in the Cricket World Cup came against New Zealand in the pools, where he almost single-handedly won the game for the Aussies with a spell of 6/28 from nine overs.

His crucial dismissal of Brendon McCullum in the final set the tone for the rest of that match, and helped Australia bowl New Zealand out for just 183.

He managed 2/20 in the final.

Notable performers with the bat in this World Cup include Kumar Sangakkara, who made 541 runs at an average of 108.20, including four consecutive centuries, and New Zealand opener Martin Guptill, who topped the scoring list with 547 at 68.37.

Sangakkara has retired from one day international cricket, along with fellow Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardane, Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi and Australia’s Michael Clarke.
