The pundits had identified the New Zealand captain as the danger man before the match, and New Zealand’s fortunes hinged on whether McCullum would get the Black Caps off to a flyer, just as he did in the pool match Australia played in New Zealand earlier in March.

That day, he almost single-handedly gave New Zealand victory, but today Mitchell Starc proved why he has been the best fast bowler in the tournament so far.

Starc claimed 2/20 in his eight overs, with Mitchell Johnson cashing in with four wickets.

New Zealand’s innings never really got going after the loss of McCullum, and they made it to 183 before being bowled out.

Australia will be chasing 184 for victory in the Cricket World Cup final.
