A 17-man Australian squad has been announced for the upcoming tours of the West Indies and England starting in June.

The side features three uncapped players at Test level in Fawad Ahmed, Peter Nevill and Adam Voges.

At 35 years of age, Voges has averaged 45.11 throughout 266 first-class innings.

Nevill, who takes the roll of backup wicket keeper, has averaged 44.87 from 84 innings with a high score of 235*.

The selectors will be hoping that Fawad Ahmed can bring with him some of the outstanding first-class form with the ball that saw him claim eight wickets for 89 runs in the Sheffield Shield final.

All eyes will be on Mitchell Starc when he picks up the red ball, with fans desperate to see him reproduce his outstanding white ball form from the World Cup in the Test arena.

Veteran quick, Ryan Harris, has been named in the 17-man squad, however will miss the tour of the West Indies.

Commenting on the chosen squad, National Selector Rod Marsh stated:

“The Test team has performed very well in recent times, but the big challenge is to do that away from home.

“We believe this squad has sufficient depth for these important Test matches against the West Indies and England and will give us the best chance of success.

“Adam Voges and Fawad Ahmed had sensational seasons at domestic level and their performances just couldn’t be ignored. They thoroughly deserve their call-up and the opportunity to be a part of this squad. We believe that both can play important roles in the side if required.

“Adam had one of the great seasons in Sheffield Shield history. He is an experienced player and quality character who will add talent and leadership to the touring party.

“Fawad has worked incredibly hard on his game and has demonstrated throughout the season that he can be a consistent wicket taker.

“Peter Nevill has been on our radar for some time and deserves his opportunity through weight of runs and performances behind the stumps. He has also demonstrated impressive leadership qualities which have caught our eye.”
