NRL action on Good Friday continues as the struggling Gold Coast Titans host the Brisbane Broncos from CBus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast in the NRL’s South-East Queensland derby. Join The Roar from 8:30pm (AEDT) for live coverage.
The Titans have really been on struggle street so far, which is understandable considering the issues facing the club.
However with Greg Bird and Dave Taylor back on deck, last weekend they managed to record a last-minute win against the Cronulla Sharks.
Currently sitting 14th, they are in desperate need of another win on home soil to try and keep in contact with the rapidly disappearing top eight.
Meanwhile, the Broncos have won three on the trot since they lost to South Sydney in the first game of the season. Even though they currently sit in fifth place, they are yet to be truly impressive and stamp their dominance over a game since. The Cowboys game was their best, and they still leaked 22 points.
Beau Falloon is out for the Titans due to suspension for a dangerous tackle, and Kierran Moseley will replace him as hooker. Matt White and Lachlan Burr rejoin an extended interchange bench, with Agnatius Paasi missing out.
Brisbane will be without centre Justin Hodges and front-rower Adam Blair, who are injured. Coming into the side for them are Daley Copley and Sam Thaiday, with Mitch Garbutt and Mitchell Dodds completing a five-man bench.
Thaiday, who got dropped to the bench only two weeks ago, will be feeling the pressure to perform and keep his starting spot. This could bring out the best in the veteran front rower.
Coming into the 2015 NRL season the Titans were not tipped by many to finish in the top half of the ladder, and the drug scandal has only set them back further. Losing players like Greg Bird and Dave Taylor for the first two rounds of the competition affected their skills on the field, but also the mentality of the team. While they managed to win last week against the Sharks, this battle against the Broncos is going to prove a much tougher game.
The Broncos will need to match the Titans’ forward pack, as this inevitably is where the game will be won. Then players like Anthony Milford and Ben Hunt must spark something. And with Josh McGuire, Sam Thaiday, Alex Glenn, Matt Gillett and Corey Parker in their pack the Broncos should be able to get the job done.
Prediction
Expect the Broncos to be far too strong for the struggling Titans. Broncos by 16.
