Titans must learn to win: Zillman

Five games into the 2015 NRL season and Gold Coast star Will Zillman says the Titans have forgotten something pretty important – how to win.

The Titans’ 26-16 derby loss to rivals Brisbane last Friday leaves them with just one win and four losses this season, and was their third straight close defeat at home following narrow losses to Newcastle and Wests Tigers earlier in the campaign.

It’s a stark contrast to the start of last year when the Titans won five of their first six matches, mostly by narrow margins.

Zillman says it’s simply a matter of re-discovering that lost art of grinding out tough wins.

“It’s about learning how to win,” Zillman said.

“You need to grind out wins throughout the year and we’re just not doing that at the moment.

“We had one close win against the Sharks but there’s three other close games that we feel we had the chance to win and we just didn’t take it. We really need to learn how to do that.”

Since ending round six last year top of the ladder the Titans have picked up just five wins from 23 games including just one win at home, a golden-point success in last year’s final game of the season against Canterbury.

“It’s certainly about the confidence,” Zillman said.

“It does become a habit and you learn how to win and you learn how to grind those tough games out. That’s what we’re learning at the moment.”

“At the end of every season there’ll be five or six games where you say we should have won those games but the cold hard fact is you didn’t.

“You need to learn from those matches, move on from them, but learn from them too.”
