Match result:

The Newcastle Jets have pulled off the upset of the season with a 1-0 win over the Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park tonight.

After holding out the Victory attack for a half, a 54th minute goal from Edson Montano was enough for the Jets to win, and stun the home crowd hoping for a Melbourne victory.

The victory also moved the Jets off the bottom of the ladder as they moved to 17 points with the win.

It all started well for the Jets as they came out of the blocks well.

After only arriving at the stadium one hour before the game, because of a protest in the city, the Jets were able to overcome the disruption and start the game well with plenty of possession.

Melbourne would come into the game after 15 minutes but struggle to create the final pass to get past the Jets.

They would move through the middle fine but fail to get the final pass to the strikers as the Jets defended well.

At half time Melbourne had more possession, more shots on goal, and more passes than the Jets, but were not able to make it count on the scoreboard.

After half time, the Jets made them pay, with the only goal of the game.

A great cross from the Jets was not cleared by the Victory defenders as it fell to Montano.

The Ecuadorian striker would find space and shoot past Thomas in the goals to give the Jets the lead.

From that moment, to the end of the game, Melbourne dominated the clash but couldn’t find a way past the Jets.

Once again they struggled to find that final pass in the box which gave them a good shot at goal.

Their strikers, Barbarouses, Berisha, Thompson, and Khalfallah, struggled to find the form from earlier in the season when they were scoring for fun.

The best chance of the second half fell to Barbarouses who ran into the box and had a good chance to score for Victory.

Unfortunately for him, and the team, he struck the ball to the left and it missed the goals.

The victory for the Jets was just their 3rd for the season and it was deserved after playing well as a team.

They defended well and frustrated their opposition which made them not play at their best.

The Jets will take plenty of confidence from the win into their final two matches of the season.

The Victory will now need to bounce back quickly before facing the Roar during the week.

They may not be at the top of the ladder at the end of the round but they are still in the hunt for the Premier’s Plate.

Match preview:

Melbourne Victory will be looking to stay at the top of the A-League ladder with a win over the bottom-placed Newcastle Jets at AAMI Park. Join The Roar for live coverage from 7:40pm (AEST).

The Jets are the only foundation club to have more head-to-head wins than Victory, with the Victory have only won once in their last five meetings with Newcastle.

However that last win for Victory was the last contest between the two teams, on December 27 last year.

After a gallant defensive effort from the Jets, it took a wonder free kick from Gui Finkler in the 85th minute to separate the teams, and break Newcastle hearts.

Despite being out of the finals hunt, Newcastle has plenty to play for in the final three games of the season. Being one point behind the Wanderers, they will be trying to win their final three games and avoid the wooden spoon.

The Jets have only finished at the bottom of the ladder once, in 2008-09. In that season they scored just 18 points, which was their lowest ever points tally.

With the team currently on 14 points after 24 matches, they will be looking to score five more points to avoid breaking that record.

The Jets have made two changes to the team that lost 2-0 to Perth on Monday. Ben Kantarovski is out with a groin injury, with Zenon Caravella out with an ankle injury. Sam Galloway and Michael Kantarovski – the brother of Ben – replace them in the squad.

For the Victory all eyes are on Nathan Coe and whether the goalkeeper will play tonight. Coe was forced off the pitch against the Phoenix last weekend with a back problem and was substituted by Lawrence Thomas in the 58th minute. Coe will undergo a fitness test to determine whether he or Thomas will stand between the sticks tonight.

The Victory have also added Scott Galloway and Connor Pain to the squad.

Prediction
Based on form, and ladder position, this should be a comfortable victory for Melbourne. Their attack is one of the best in the league and it will eventually get on top of the Jets.

Melbourne 1-0.
