For a side in the hunt for promotion from England’s fourth division football league, a 74th minute match-winning free kick is an incredibly significant moment.

For David Worrall, the Southend United player who achieved that feat, scoring the goal meant far more than vital points next to his team’s name.

Worrall was making his return for Southend against Bury FC, after spending weeks off following the premature birth and subsequent death of his son.

The team’s manager, Phil Brown gave the following statement following the win:

“Dave wants to dedicate that goal to his son, who died after just 45 minutes.

“He demanded the ball and stuck it in the top corner.

“He and his girlfriend have been through the mill and that’s been part of the reason why he hasn’t played recently.

“He wanted to play the game. He wanted to start. He knew how important it is to get this club out of this division.”

The significance of scoring the goal for his team and son was made all the more clear post-match.
