Alex Brosque considered retirement after slow start in A-League

Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque admits he thought seriously about hanging up the boots at A-League season’s end before hitting a late purple patch of form.

The former Socceroos striker indicated on Thursday he could have easily left to make way for a younger player despite having another year on his contract, having only scored three times in his first 22 matches.

But after striking rich form including a brace of goals in each of second-placed Sydney FC’s last two games, he’s definitely returning.

“I had thought about it (leaving),” Brosque said on Thursday.

“I do have a two-year deal but there was no point carrying on if I felt I wasn’t performing or I wasn’t contributing to the team.

“But, having spoken to a few people, I definitely think that with the sort of form where I’m enjoying my football it would be a pretty silly decision,” he said.

Brosque’s Sky Blues face fourth-placed Wellington Phoenix at their Westpac Stadium home on Sunday in a final round shootout that will decide the coveted second place on the ladder.

A top-two spot ensures a week off and direct entry to the semi-finals.

Defence will be crucial on Sunday as Phoenix need a win to finish second while the Sky Blues can retain that spot with a draw.

“We have conceded a lot of goals, which everyone says for a team of Arnie’s (coach Arnold Graham) is very uncharacteristic,” Brosque said.

“It’s not so much the back four that need to work on stopping the goals – it’s as a team.

“They are areas we’ve looked at, especially with Wellington being so dangerous.”

Brosque is expecting a more dangerous Phoenix outfit than the one his side beat 3-0 in round 23.

Socceroos striker Nathan Burns and All Whites star Michael McGlinchey were out on international duty in that match, but they’ll line up in the Phoenix forward line on Sunday.

The Sky Blues are seeking to make A-League history by maintaining their unbeaten away record in Wellington.
“It’d be special for the club and if we can do that we also finish second, so it’d be two great achievements.”

The Sky Blues’ top-two mission will be boosted by the return of midfielder Mickael Tavares and defender Nikola Petkovic from groin injuries.
