Which Game of Thrones character is your NRL team?

Just like many other Australians, I found myself counting down the days until Monday 6 April.

Can anyone guess why? I’ll give you a hint – it had nothing to do with NRL or the Parramatta Eels.

Monday 6 April was the day that Game of Thrones returned to my television screen.

I love Game of Thrones. I am hooked on it – the murder, the scheming, the lies! My favourite character is Daenerys Targaryen. I look up to her so much that my family has started referring to me as Khaleesi.

This week, for something a little bit different, I thought I would combine two of my favourite things at the moment – Game of Thrones and the NRL in order to work out which NRL teams the various Game of Thrones characters would support.

I would love your thoughts.

11. I am starting with the blatantly obvious. Queen of Meereen, Breaker of Chains, Khaleesi, Daenerys Targaryen would of course, support the St George Illawarra Dragons. She is, after all, the Mother of Dragons.

For those of you who do not watch the show, Daenerys is the mother of three dragons – the first of their kind to be seen in Westeros for centuries. She hatched these dragons by placing her dragon eggs in a funeral pyre.

Daenerys then walked into the flames to birth her dragons. Her dragons are named Drogon, Viserion and Rhaegal.

Naturally, Daenerys would feel right at home with her Dragons brethren, particularly with Happy the Dragon parading the field at half time. Think about it – if you say Drogon really quickly, it almost sounds like you are chanting ‘Dugan’.

10. Samwell Tarly. Sam only started supporting NRL when he reached the Wall. He took his vows pretty seriously and decided when he took the black he would also start supporting the Penrith Panthers.

9. Jon Snow. While he may ‘know nothing’, he certainly knows where his allegiance lies when we are talking about NRL. I am very sorry to have to announce this, especially to all my followers who live and support New South Wales, but Jon Snow is a Queenslander and his favourite team is the North Queensland Cowboys.

We are introduced to Jon Snow as the illegitimate son of Lord Eddark Stark of Winterfell, an ancient fortress in the North.

Jon later decides to leave Winterfell for the Wall, which is further north, in order to protect the kingdom of Westeros from those who dwell north of the Wall, the Wildlings.

Jon Snow is one of the few rangers at the Wall who has ventured north of the Wall in order to negotiate and deal with the wildlings. Are you getting a theme here? North. Jon Snow is a Northerner.

Much like the North Queensland Cowboys who are the most northern team in our NRL competiton, Jon Snow I proud of his Northern heritage and is a big fan of the North Queensland Cowboys.

8. The Dothraki – our horsemen are obviously fans of the Brisbane Broncos.

7. Our next character is born to be a bulldog. She bleeds blue and white. Her bite is worse than her bark. Her name is Cersei Lannister. Cersei Lannister is the widow of King Robert Baratheon, the lover of her brother Jamie Lannister, mother of Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen and the Queen Regent.

Cersei has a lot of respect for another Kingdom (read the Canterbury Bulldogs) who has a female leader. While Cersei is not as competent as her counterpart, Raelene Castle (especially in her ability to hold power) – she could certainly teach her a thing or two about lying and manipulation.

6. While it is unknown how many people live in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, my research consistently tells me that the region with the biggest population is the Reach.

The Reach is watched over by House Tyrell from the castle of Highgarden, with the current leader being Lord Mace Tyrell (assisted by his mother Olenna Tyrell who is considered the real leader of the family).

It only makes sense that the leader of House Tyrell, with such a large population, would seek to align itself with the NRL club with the biggest population (also read as members). That club is South Sydney.

With 34,167 members (and growing), the South Sydney Rabbitohs have another powerful benefactor (other than Russell Crowe) in Mace Tyrell.

5. Then we get to the Canberra Raiders whose head coach is a man who has been at so many NRL clubs that we have lost count. It’s only natural that Petyr Baelish, a man who changes his allegiance faster than Tyrion downs a glass of wine, is drawn to Ricky Stuart – a character who has aligned himself with a whole series of clubs including the Roosters, the Sharks, the Eels and the Raiders.

Another closet fan of the Raiders is Mance Rayder (for his namesake). Truth be told, the Raiders have had a couple of Wildlings in their squad at times as well.

4. Some of you may have forgotten about House Swyft – a house which is aligned with House Lannister. While not big players in Westeros (unlike the NRL team that they support), their vigil is a Rooster.

The Sydney Roosters are an obvious choice of support for this House.

3. Much like Greg Bird at the Gold Coast Titans, Roose Bolton has no idea how to behave at a wedding. He has pledged his allegiance to the Gold Coast Titans.

2. I’ve been thinking all afternoon to try and work out which sensational Game Of Thrones character would support my Parramatta Eels? Would it be someone with the cunningness of Cersei? Someone with the ravaging good looks of Jon Snow?

Someone with the clever wit of Tyrion? Alas, no. Unfortunately, Reek is a Parramatta supporter. He feels a certain kinship with a bunch of supporters who also know what it feels like to be tortured.

The Parramatta Eels also have a very loyal fan in Joffrey Lannister… because they always choke at the last minute.

1. And finally, Tywin Lannister has to be a Manly supporter – because he knows what it feels like to be despised by the entirety of the Seven Kingdoms!
