Forget Cripps, Curnow and Walsh - the unsung Blues heroes driving Carlton's premiership push
The Blues have truly stood up and are a genuine flag threat in 2024 and they have their younger brigade of troops to thank for it.
Melbourne radio announcer John Burns has apologised for his part in the Bachar Houli vilification controversy, but insists he can’t recall making any offensive comments.
Burns, who hosts 3AW morning show Ross and John with Ross Stevenson, is alleged to have referred to Houli as a “terrorist” at a club function at the MCG on Friday night during the Tigers’ match against Melbourne.
A Richmond official overheard what he believed to be offensive comments made during a conversation involving Burns, who was a guest of the club, and alerted chief executive Brendon Gale.
“It has been suggested to me that during the conversation with my friend I was overheard saying something which that person found offensive,” Burns said in a statement.
“I have no recollection of making an offensive remark, however I acknowledge that a complaint has been made, and the idea that something I have said has offended someone is mortifying to me.
“If I have said anything that has offended anybody I unreservedly apologise, in particular, to the people at the match and the Richmond Football Club.”
Burns maintained that he was not unduly affected by alcohol and that making such a comment would be completely out of character for him.
Richmond released a statement on Monday afternoon backing the unnamed official’s version of events.
However, the Tigers also accepted Burns’ apology and consider the matter closed.
Richmond captain Trent Cotchin spoke to the media before Burns came forward and said that he was disappointed with the situation.
“There’s no place for it in our game,” Cotchin said.
“It’s disappointing to see and hear and as a collective we need to make a stronger stand on (vilification).
“It doesn’t just happen in Australia or Australian football, it happens all over the world and we just need to create a better environment and a better culture throughout our world.”
